The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC no.146) describes faith as “a gratuitous gift from God, and an assent of our of our will to the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen”. Sacrifice of Isaac by Caravaggio (c. 1603)

In today’s First Reading (Genesis 17: 3-9), God promises “to make Abraham the Father of a host of nations”. Abraham responds by putting his faith in God and trusts that what is promised will be fulfilled. Indeed, Isaac, the son-heir, is born to Abraham and Sarah, out of what had previously been a barren relationship. Thus, from Isaac, Abraham’s descendants extend through King David, down to Joseph, husband of Mary, mother of Jesus, the Savior of the world.
